Frommer's Budapest and the Best of Hungary

by: Ryan James
This book was a backup choice because the new edition of Lonely Planet Budapest isn't out yet. Aside from a two-page essay about the history of Jews in Budapest, there is not much historical or cultural information. Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Lonely Planet format, but I appreciate the chapters they include on a country's history and culture, as well an etiquette section in the appendix--I find it gives me much-needed context for understanding different cultures. In Frommers, there are some cultural tidbits throughout, but that's not easily searchable when you're on the go.

Hungary

by: Neal Bedford, Lisa Dunford, Steve Fallon
Lonely Planet books are always fairly well organized and this edition of Hungary is no exception. The information is current and doesn't neglect any corner of this very interesting and beautiful country. The book contains information to satisfy a wide range of interests; everything from those interested in winery tours to those looking for a relaxing beach vacation at Europe's largest lake, Lake Balaton. Likewise, the book nicely balances the needs of those who travel by rail, bus or by their own rented car, as we did.

Vienna Prague Budapest, 2nd

by: Mary-Ann Gallagher, Matthew Gardner, Sadakat Kadri
This book is full of interesting information about these cities, with lots of detailed description. But there is not a single photo or illustration except for the cover. This is a major drawback since, as the saying goes, "one picture is worth a thousand words", and without the images, it is hard to imagine what is being described. The maps are poor and hard to read. The typeface is small and hard to read. The book is also several years out of date. For instance, it predicted both the Czech Republic and Hungary would be in the Euro bloc before now, and this still has not happened.

Culture Shock! Hungary: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette

by: Zsuzsanna Ardó
Zsuzsanna Ardó's well written guide to the customs and etiquette of Hungarian people holds relevant information for anyone traveling or doing business there.
I assist English teachers at a primary school in Hungary and am looking forward to incorporating the many tips provided on business and general communication when speaking with my colleagues at school.
I also appreciated the abundance of Hungarian proverbs and sayings written out in both languages. These are fun to bring up with Hungarian friends and since they often don't translate literally, I'd not have been able to sort them out just using my translation dictionary.
